Joe, actually Detective Story isn't translated into English yet. It really is a great book. Imre Kertesz is one of my favorite European authors. He wrote Detective Story in 1976 in Hungary. The story is about a torturer who is now on trial and recalls the story of one of his victims. Kertesz set the story in South America because as it deals with the doings of an illegal dictatorship he wanted to avoid censorship in his own country. His critic could apply to any dictatorship or governments that undermines basic civil rights - you know which ones I mean :-)
